Representation of opposition parties in constituency election commissions: 2012 compared to 2004 and 2008

This year opposition parties nominated more representatives to constituency election commissions, but their total number is 8% smaller than during the election of 2008.

If one takes a look at the monitoring of the previous parliamentary election – in 2004 there were 22 representatives of opposition parties in the constituency election commissions, in 2008 – 38 representatives and in 2012 – 48. However, it’s worth turning attention to the number of representatives nominated by the parties. In 2004 there were 318 nominees, in 2008 – 118 and this year – 199. Thus, in 2004 the representation of the regime’s opponents in constituency commissions was 7%, in 2008 – 32% and in 2012 – 24%. It means that during the parliamentary election of 2008 fewer people were nominated to the commissions, but more of them were included.

According to information of the Central Election Commission, the Belarusian Popular Front and the Belarusian Leftist Party “Fair World” demonstrated the greatest activity during the nomination of representatives to constituency election commissions.

All in all, 48 representatives of opposition parties were included in precinct election commissions this year: 15 in the Brest region, 6 in the Vitsebsk region, 3 in the Homel region, 3 in the Mahiliou region, 4 in the Minsk region and 14 in Minsk.
