Registration of future candidates’ initiative groups in the regions: denials and competition

Orsha

The election commission of Orsha constituency No. 27 has registered the initiative group of Kokhanava resident Mikalai Petrushenka, activist of the “Nash Dom” campaign and member of the “Fair World” Party.

However, the commission dismissed the application submitted by supporters of political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich, referring to procedural violations in the papers. The same decision was taken by the election commission of local constituency No. 26.

 

Lelchytsy

Current MP Siarhei Kanoplich, former chairman of Yelsk district executive committee, is said to be running for Parliament again, after his nomination was supported by a local forestry enterprise. The nomination has been actively promoted by the district’s state-owned newspaper “Narodny Holas”, whose latest article is entitled “Stability and Confidence in Tomorrow”.

 

Pruzhany and Ivatsevichy

The election commission of Pruzhany constituency No. 9 has registered only one initiative group – that of head of local executive committee Aliaksandr Yurkevich. Meanwhile, the initiative group of Aliaksandr Kabanau, member of the United Civil Party form the town of Biaroza, has been denied registration owing to a technical error.

The election commission of Ivatsevichy constituency No. 11 has registered the initiative group of Valiantsin Lazarenkau, activist of the Tell the Truth civil campaign and head of Brest regional office of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada). The application of Mrs. Viktoryia Hryhiuk, Biaroza member of the United Civil Party, has been dismissed, since it was not submitted by the potential candidate herself.

 

Lida

The initiative groups of two representatives of pro-democratic parties – Siarhei Skrabets, head of the organizing committee of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaya Hramada), and Yanina Huzouskaya, member of the Fair World Leftist Party, – have been registered in Lida constituency No. 54.

 

Baranavichy

The election commission of Baranavichy constituency No. 6 has registered the initiative groups of Aliaksandr Halkevich, local activist of the Fair World Party, and civil activist Ryhor Hryk, who was dismissed from the city’s machine assembly enterprise for his pro-active civil stance.

Meanwhile, there is only one potential candidate for Parliament in local constituency No. 7 – Mikalai Yazubets, head of Baranavichy district executive committee.

 

Mahiliou region: 64 applications for registration of initiative groups submitted

The largest amount of initiative groups (8) was registered in constituencies No. 85 and 86. Local human rights defenders report several denials of registration, including to the initiative group of former presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich. Observer Barys Bukhel says election commission No. 87 has not registered the initiative group of Uladzimir Tsiarshchanka, as his nomination reportedly featured certain inaccuracies.

 

Minsk

The election commission of constituency No. 101 has registered the initiative group of Valiantsina Alinevich, mother of political prisoner Ihar Alinevich, who is currently serving his sentence in Navapolatsk penal colony. However, she is said to be involved in the United Civil Party’s campaign urging voters to boycott the elections.

The election commission of the same constituency has denied registration to supporters of Mikalai Statkevich. The nomination of another ex-candidate for President Ales Mikhalevich is yet to be considered.

The city’s constituency election commission No. 109 is expected to consider the application of For Freedom leader Aliaksandr Milinkevich.

 

Polatsk

The nominations submitted by two potential candidates – Mikalai Statkevich and Siarhei Rabtsau – have been dismissed by Polatsk constituency election commission. The initiative groups of five more pro-democratic candidates – Lidziya Sahidulina (Tell the Truth campaign), Aliaksei Mikhalchanka, Natallia Huivik, Mikalai Pankrat and Aliaksei Filimonau – have been registered and are authorized to canvass for votes.

 

Chachersk

The election commission of Buda-Kashaliova constituency No. 38 has registered only one initiative group – that of Piotr Shostak, chairman of Rechytsa district executive committee, who has already been actively advertised by local state-owned press.

 

Krychau

On 20 July, the election commission of Krychau constituency No. 83 finally registered the initiative group of Valery Karankevich, Khotsimsk activist of the Tell the Truth campaign. His nomination was earlier dismissed, after some of his supporters withdrew their signatures due to administrative pressure.

 

Babruisk

Babruisk district election commission has denied registration to the initiative group of Mikalai Statkevich. Meanwhile, the commission has registered the nomination of Aliaksandr Irkho, member of the Fair World Party, who is going to run for Parliament at two constituencies.

 

Slonim

On 20 July, the election commission of Slonim constituency No. 58 registered two initiative groups, including one of Ivan Sheha, local member of the Belarusian Popular Front.

 

Minsk

The constituency election commission No. 95 has denied registration to the initiative group of political prisoner MIkalai Statkevich.

Two more nominations, including those of Ales Mikhalevich and Anatol Liabedzka – are yet to be considered. Ales Mikhalevich, who is currently abroad, has submitted his nominations to all the constituencies of Minsk.

The city’s constituency election commission No. 108 has denied registration to the supporters of Ivan Amelchanka, activist of the Tell the Truth campaign.

 

Asipovichy

Asipovichy constituency election commission No. 89 has registered two initiative groups out of three nominations, including that of Fair World activist Aliaksandr Irkho. The initiative group of political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich has been traditionally denied registration.

The commission has also registered the initiative group of another pro-democratic candidate – Albert Yaumenau, activist of the Belarusian Popular Front Party.

 

Slutsk

Out of four applications submitted to Slutsk constituency election commission No. 67, there is only one representative of the pro-democratic forces – Anatol Yurevich, member of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaya Hramada), whose nomination is expected to be considered on 24 July.

 

Barysau

Leu Marholin, deputy chair of the United Civil Party, has submitted his nomination to Barysau constituency election commission. The final decision will be taken on 24 July.

 

Pinsk district

The election commissions of Pinsk and Pinsk district have registered five initiative groups – all of them are those of pro-government candidates.
